Bulletproof framework for product design practices and interviews

Product design is a common question for Product Manager interviews because the thinking process is critical in the PM’s daily life. Here is a framework you can apply to both interviews and your PM daily jobs.

Define the strategy.

Gather information to understand the customers and the market. For interviews, use the interviewer as a resource for some of the questions. And share you are going to answer this question with Strategy, Design, and Summary three parts.

Research on this field to understand

• Why the decision was made to build it
• The global vision of this field
• Understand the competition and opportunities

Defined the product vision and strategy

• Vision: what kind of product are we trying to build
• Strategy: How are we going to approach the vision, where to start (US market VS other markets, build a new product VS acquire an existing product and improve it; leverage current customers or acquire new customers)

When information is not sufficient, make educational guesses; make assumptions for interviews ……
